Established as a necropolis in 1924, a place where San Franciscans could bury their dead, the city of Colma, California, whose city motto is ''It's Great To Be Alive In Colma!'' is currently home to more dead inhabitants than alive ones.

With most of Colma's land dedicated to cemeteries, the population of the dead outnumbers the living by over a thousand to one. Among those buried in Colma's 17 cemeteries are William Randolph Hearst, Wyatt Earp and Joe DiMaggio.
