Spring Clouds on a Rural River was created in 1965, when Zhang Daqian's splashed ink and colour paintings reached his pinnacle of artistry. It was not until almost 20 years after its creation that the painting was displayed publicly at a large-scale exhibition at the University of Southern California Pacific Asia Museum.
