Beijing appoints kindergarten supervisors after child abuse scandal
BEIJING - Beijing's education commission has decided to appoint supervisors for all kindergartens in the city.
The Beijing Municipal Education Commission requires the supervisors to conduct on-the-spot checks at least once a month, with each supervisor responsible for overseeing five kindergartens.
Beijing police investigated a child abuse case last month, after a female teacher at RYB Education New World kindergarten was found to have used sewing needles to "discipline" children who would not sleep.
The kindergarten has since apologized for the incident.
Beijing authorities have ordered tighter oversight for preschools, especially to enforce a high moral code among teachers.
The education commission requires that every kindergarten has an information board showing the supervisor's name, photo and contact number, for parents who wish to file complaints.
A total of 835 supervisors have been appointed to oversee more than 1,500 kindergartens across Beijing.
