WASHINGTON -- A school bus collided with a dump truck on a major New Jersey highway Thursday morning, local authorities said.

The crash happened just before 10:30 am on I-80 West in Mount Olive Township, with the bus ending up on its side in the grass median.

An unknown number of children were on board the school bus, which reportedly has the Paramus Board of Education logo on its side.

The extent of the injuries is also unknown, but at least two victims have life-threatening injuries, according to local reports.

Several ambulances and other emergency vehicles were at the scene.

Hackettstown Medical Center said that it is receiving 10 patients, local media reported.

Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum who was observing the rescue efforts at the scene said the bus was "mangled" with its chassis detached from the rest of the vehicle.

"It's a horrific scene," he said.

Route 80 is closed in both directions in the area, police said.
