Xizang Airport sees surge in pet shipments

Tseten Drolma, deputy manager of the cargo transport department at Xizang Airport Group, began working in 1999. She shared insights with reporters that in the early years, inbound cargo to Xizang mainly consisted of express parcels and daily necessities. In recent years, however, pet transportation has increased significantly, with breeds such as British Shorthair (golden and silver shaded), West Highland White Terrier, Alaskan Malamute, and Bulldog becoming common at the airport.

She noted that younger generations, particularly those born in the 1990s and 2000s, are showing a stronger preference for owning pets. During July and August, higher oxygen levels on the plateau improve the survival rate of transported cats and dogs. In peak seasons, the airport now handles up to 17 tons of pet shipments per month.
