SHANGHAI -- International companies are expected to get the opportunity to start businesses in the central area where the 2010 World Expo was held last year, according to local authorities.

Shanghai's urban planning and land resources administrative bureau began to solicit public opinion Tuesday about a draft blueprint for reusing the land of the Expo.

A total of 6.68 square kilometers of land, including the 5.28-sq-km Expo Garden, will be developed into five zones featuring cultural designs, museums, international communities, a commercial street and a riverside sightseeing belt, according to the plan.

In addition, a special area will be reserved for future sustainable planning to cater to rapid urban development, said Su Gongzhou, a senior urban planner.

If the draft plan is approved, foreign companies will be able to run offices or open shops in the commercial zone.

Shanghai residents are welcomed to submit suggestions and opinions about the plan to the bureau within three months, officials said.
