BEIJING - China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) has urged local procuratorates at all levels to step up efforts in investigating corruption and other duty-related crimes in construction projects.

Prosecutors were told to make more efforts in investigating major construction safety incidents that "severely harm people's economic and personal interests," and seriously punish corrupt conduct in these cases, said a SPP circular released Wednesday.

The document stresses prosecutors pay close attention to cases relating to officials who don't fulfil their duties or violate rules to seek personal gains through their involvement in public construction projects. It also urges strengthened investigation and management on slack supervision and bribes during bidding processes.

According to the document, key focuses should be construction projects related to farmland and irrigation, as well as land approval, evaluations on environmental influences, project implementation, use of funds and government procurements.

While calling on prosecutors to take the initiative in investigating potential crimes and in cooperating with other departments during investigations, the SPP ordered local prosecuting agencies to draw on experiences of every case and draft prevention methods for corruption-prone organizations.
