China beefs up safety check on nuke plants

BEIJING - The Chinese government, drawing lessons from Japan's recent Fukushima nuclear crisis, is working on nuclear safety planning and conducting more regular safety inspections for nuclear facilities, a senior official said in Beijing on Friday.

Li said nuclear safety awareness and safety standards must be improved. He also called for tightened supervision, more effective emergency response mechanisms, enhanced information disclosure and international cooperation.
"The Chinese government attaches great importance to the Fukushima nuclear crisis and will learn a lesson from the crisis," he said.
