The suspect was detained on Monday three hours after the blast at the RT-Mart supermarket on Xinyu Road in Shanghai and confessed to the crime. The man, surnamed Qu, detonated the explosives in a locker used by customers to store their belongings while shopping.

Staff at the store received an anonymous call around 1 pm threatening to blow up the store. The blast, which damaged several lockers, occurred before police and bomb disposal experts arrived.

Customers and staff were evacuated from the store before the explosion occurred and there were no reports of any injuries.

No further details were available.
