Ten days after Guangzhou announced it was halting the city's baby hatch, an infant girl was found abandoned on a roadside in the city Tuesday morning, according to dayoo.com.
The baby was found near a construction site in Baiyun district and sent to a local welfare house at noon the same day, according to police.
A police officer said the girl was about 8 months old and looked healthy. "I don't know why her parents abandoned her," he added.
A bag of supplies including paper diapers, clothes and blankets were placed nearby, but no identity information has been found.
A woman who works near the site said she spotted the baby at about 8:40am.
Another sanitation worker said he saw somebody feeding the baby at around 7am. "They were middle-aged people. I couldn't tell if they were her parents," he said.
Guangzhou's baby hatch was suspended because of mounting pressure from an increasing number of abandoned babies, according to local authorities.
