The city's symbolic landscape, which offers a glimpse into Chinese history and culture, has attracted many foreign leaders in the past, notably former US president Richard Nixon, who toured the Great Wall and the Forbidden City during his groundbreaking trip to China in 1972; and Margaret Thatcher, who also visited the Great Wall in 1977 as leader of the UK's Conservative Party.
