Ancient salt lake turns pink due to algae

The color of an ancient salt lake in Yuncheng, Shanxi province turned to rose pink on one side recently, attracting many residents to visit the area on Sept 25. The lake has been separated by road across the lake. Local people have been extracting salt crystals from the lake for more than 4,000 years. People can float on the lake's surface due to the water's high salinity, which has earned the lake the name "China's Dead Sea". The lake has turned pink because of red-colored algae called dunaliella salinas in the lake. [Photo/chinanews.com]
