Intelligence and digitalization have been playing more important roles in determining the future of the global manufacturing industry, said industry experts and businessmen on Sept 24 during a side event that is part of the 9th Pujiang Innovation Forum.
The theme of this year’s forum, which took place between Sept 23 and 26, is “Double Engines: Technological and Institutional Innovation”.
“Presently, the integration of technologies in computing, information, mobile Internet, big data and manufacturing is reshaping the industrial structure and bringing about major transformation in production and industrial patterns,” said Daniel Cadet, director of Cadet Consulting Company.
Sany Group, the largest machinery manufacturer by revenue in China, is a good example of how a private-owned enterprise has utilized big data to become a leading industry player.
It took Sany Group eight years and more than 1 billion yuan ($150 million) to set up a real-time online platform that can monitor more than 230,000 facilities to produce over 5,000 parameters.
“It cannot be intelligent manufacturing if we don’t have any big data supporting us. We are forming an online platform to share big data with the small- and medium-sized enterprises,” said He Dongdong, senior vice president and chief business process and IT of Sany Group at the forum.
As one of the nation’s first companies to embrace intelligent manufacturing, Sany now has 20 flexible production lines that generates 30 different types of products. The company’s output value per capita experienced a 24 percent growth and has a total output value of 10 billion yuan.
“We have also created parameters that enable us to monitor the construction of our projects all over the world. It also helps to predict the demand for machine parts, equipment failures and even the macro economic situation,” said He.
The Chinese government has identified intelligent manufacturing and industrial big data as key factors in the country’s “Made in China 2025” initiatives. Shanghai, as a growing manufacturing hub in the country, has been transforming part of the city so that it can be a part of a pilot intelligence manufacturing program.
For instance, Lingang New City in Pudong district is working to become the ‘brain’ of the city’s intelligent manufacturing by launching several big data industrial platforms that are supported by research and innovation institutions.
“Intelligent manufacturing and big data should work together to encourage more enterprises in Lingang to apply the cross-field and cross-platform integration of industrial big data, and upgrade the products to be smarter and more innovative,” said Chen Jie, party secretary and executive deputy director of Shanghai Lingang Area Development Administration.
