Great concertos

Russian-born violinist Vadim Repin will join the China Philharmonic Orchestra for a performance for the first time in Beijing.

Repin, 40, won the Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition at 11, spending his prize money on his first-ever shopping trip.

He began his recording career at 14, and came under the wings of violin legend Yehudi Menuhin, who taught him the great concertos.

The performance conducted by Lin Daye will include Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D and Symphony No 4 in F Minor.

Sketches with style

Belgian-American fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg will open her first exhibition in China. It will feature the designer's creations and sketches from the past 40 years and will also present some of her personal art collection.

Oil landscapes

Chao Ge's solo show, Instant and Eternity - 30 Years of Art Pursuits, features 82 oil paintings and sketches created over the past 30 years, along with photos and videos shot over the period.

His works record scenes of grasslands, deserts and clouds that reflect his personal emotions.

Ode to nature

What's on

Chengdu artist Huang Tao's first solo show in Beijing features more than 40 of his latest oil paintings, Chinese ink paintings and calligraphic works.

"I created these works to eulogize the beauty of nature and to express my hope for a harmonious world," says the 72-year-old.

Shanghai

British drama

Adapted from a best-selling novel of the same title by British writer Susan Hill, The Woman in Black has been staged for 22 consecutive years.

Presented in Chinese, the play is part of a series of Chinese productions of modern Western plays in Shanghai.

Words and dreams

Beijing bicycles

Zhang Pengye's oil paintings take viewers back to a recent past when people got around on bikes and having one represented wealth. Zhang's paintings have people riding bikes through Tian'anmen Square, set against a rising sun.
