'Swan' leaps to top of foreign box office chart

LOS ANGELES – With the 83rd Annual Academy Awards set to take the world stage on Sunday, "Black Swan" finally tops the international box office chart with an impressive $17.4 million in 34 territories and a worldwide total of $182.1 million.

This proves that the so-called "Oscar bump" is not just a North American phenomenon, but reflects the excitement felt around the world by audiences who are anticipating this weekend's telecast. "Black Swan" has five nominations, including best picture and for the favored Natalie Portman.

Another beneficiary of international Oscar fever is "The King's Speech," which ascends from fourth to second place with $16 million in 34 territories and a global cumulative total of $237 million. As the odds-on favorite to take home multiple statuettes, this is one King that is currently ruling over an adoring international audience. Notably the combined worldwide gross for "Black Swan" and "The King's Speech" is a whopping $419.1 million.

Also shooting up the chart in anticipation of the Oscar broadcast is the Coen Brothers' Western saga "True Grit," which advanced three spots for a sixth-place finish of $9.8 million in 32 territories. With 10 nominations, the film has captivated a worldwide audience to the tune of $196 million.
