LOS ANGELES - "Megamind" has become the first cartoon this year to score a triple play on all three home video charts.
DreamWorks Animation's superhero comedy, a relative disappointment at the worldwide box office with sales of $319 million, debuted at No. 1 on both Nielsen VideoScan's DVD and Blu-ray Disc sales charts and on Home Media Magazine's rental chart for the week ending February 27.
What made this feat all the more amazing was that the disc was released on a Friday instead of a Tuesday, so sales and rental data are drawn from just three days instead of the usual six. DreamWorKs CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said last week that despite the film's soft box office performance he expected it would ultimately be profitable. It cost about $130 million to make, and an additional $160 million or so to market.
Coming in second on the two sales charts was "Due Date," a comedy starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. Because Warner Bros. delays shipping its new releases to Netflix and Redbox by 28 days, "Due Date" was available for rent at brick-and-mortar stores only and debuted on the national rental chart at No. 20. The Disney romantic comedy "You Again" was the No. 2 rental for a second week.
A third new release, "All-Star Superman," an animated original movie, debuted at No. 5 on the DVD and at No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
The previous week's top seller and renter, "Unstoppable" and "RED," each slipped to No. 3 on their respective charts.
