WASHINGTON - United States Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the US is slowly winning back the trust of others in its ability to manage debt.

"They (The Chinese) are never going to worry more than we are," he said in response to a question about China being the largest holder of American debt during a news conference on Tuesday.

He said the US is in the process of rebuilding its financial systems and the trust of other countries after the economic downturn.

"We've got to move now to the next obvious challenge to start framework for fiscal consolidation and stability, bring the debt down," he said.

He said the Chinese have followed the progress in the US closely and "with respect".

"They've got the type of basic confidence, and they can see broadly that the United States in the end does the right thing. In the end, US government proves itself willing to be able to act in the kind of responsiveness," he said.

"Our job is to make sure we earn that (trust)," he said.
