Cancer support
October is the month during which several events are held to increase awareness of breast cancer, and to raise funds for research of cancer and help poor patients. On Oct 9, cosmetics giant Estee Lauder organized a charity concert in Shanghai to start its annual campaign. Pop singers Shun Zi, Zhou Hui, Yu Kewei, Ping Guan and others performed with some patients and doctors. Zhou sang the event's main song, Flying Ribbon. Doctors from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center gave lectures on the causes, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Estee Lauder will also launch a Chinese website for patients to share their stories of struggle with the disease. Estee Lauder founded its Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in 1992 with the launch of the pink ribbon.
Discover adventure
Outdoor clothing brand Discovery Expedition unveiled a new range of products that caters to camping, driving and adventure in Beijing on Sept 28. The brand also named British adventurer Bear Grylls (pictured, third left) as the first brand ambassador for the Chinese market. Grylls shared his outdoor living experiences with Chinese fans during a news conference. The brand, in collaboration with its local partner, Fei Fan Tan Suo Outdoor Products, has opened 30 stores across China since last year. It has an online store at Tmall.com, a major online retailer operated by Alibaba Group. The brand plans to open 35 stores this year, says Nicolas Bonard, senior vice-president of Discovery Consumer Products, a division of Discovery Communications.
Fur designs
Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology recently joined with Finland company Saga Furs to present a catwalk on international fur trends for 2015. Todd Lynn from the Central Saint Martins, London; Brandon Sun from Parsons The New School of Design in New York; Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters, designer duo of the US label Creatures of The Wind; Fang Jing, designer of Italian brand Occhivivi; Finnish designer Kirsti Anneli Aho and Chinese designers Grace Chen and Wu Xuewei were among those who presented their fur creations. "This is a great opportunity to bring Western and Chinese designers on the same runway," says Nora Tse, head of Saga Furs Marketing, Asia.
