Li urges innovation to nurture medicine

Premier Li Keqiang asked educational and health authorities to create reforms and innovate ways to nurture clinical talent more effectively, and to examine new ways of fostering medical talent with Chinese characteristics. Coordinating academic education offered by medical colleges and practical training from hospitals are currently effective ways to nurture talent, Li said in a written instruction to the meeting on Thursday.

Ex-aluminum boss faces prosecution

Li Dongguang, the former vice-president of the Aluminum Corp of China and former general manager of the China Aluminum International Trading Co, is to be prosecuted for allegedly taking bribes, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said on Thursday. Li resigned while under investigation in November last year.

Nanjing imposes fireworks ban

Fireworks will be banned in main areas of Nanjing, Jiangsu province, as of Jan 1, the Nanjing Daily reported. Fireworks sales are outlawed entirely in Xuanwu, Qinhuai, Jianye, Gulou and Yuhuatai, and in part of the Qixia, Jiangning, Pukou and Liuhe districts. The move is to improve the city's air quality. Police and officials from the departments of industry and commerce will inspect all markets, wedding ceremony agencies, flower shops and previous sellers to collect illegal fireworks.

New patrol vessel delivered to Nigeria

China delivered a new-type offshore patrol ship to Nigeria on Thursday, the first such vessel handed over from China to the African country.

The patrol ship was designed and manufactured by China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, and was delivered in Qidong. With a length of 95.5 meters, width of 12.2 meters and displacement of 1,800 metric tons, it will become the largest and most advanced naval vessel in Nigeria, said the CSIC.

Brothers help rehouse flood-hit villagers

Four brothers surnamed Xiong from Shuibei town in Xinyu have given fellow villagers more than 360 million yuan ($58.6 million) to build 72 houses, the Xinhua website reported on Thursday. Villagers only need to pay 30,000 yuan to get a house while poor residents don't need to pay anything. The brothers, who own a real estate business in other cities, made the offer after a flood destroyed most village homes in 2010.

Injured panda dies after surgery

An injured panda, rescued and sent for treatment on Nov 17, died in a panda protection center in Chengdu on Tuesday, thepaper.cn reported. It was originally thought Ping Ping, the 3-year-old panda, had been attacked by a group of martens, but examination revealed that a 4-cm-long wound on its stomach was caused by a fall from a tree. Ping Ping was found injured, with its intestines exposed, in a cave near a patrol station in the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve, and was reported being out of danger after surgery on Nov 20, but the wound proved fatal after all.

School resumes in quake-hit region

Lessons resumed on Thursday for 240 students of a junior high school in Kangding after an earthquake last week. The magnitude-6.3 earthquake damaged Muya Zuqing School in Tagong, the epicenter of Saturday's earthquake. The students will be taught in six prefabricated classrooms. Five people were killed in the earthquake, and 68 are injured.

Mayoral aide accused of disciplinary breaches

Chen Zhengming, assistant to the mayor of Chengdu, is about to face trial for serious violations of discipline and laws, the provincial anti-corruption watchdog said on Wednesday. Chen, 56, holds a doctoral degree in philosophy and was promoted to Party chief in Bixian county in 1998.

Police officer alleged to own 69 houses

A police officer in Ningbo who allegedly owns 69 houses said he had hardships that could not be revealed to others, thepaper.com reported on Thursday. Allegations appeared online on Wednesday, but the city's Hangzhouwa New Area public security bureau said it investigated the officer, surnamed Shen, a week earlier and found no evidence that he broke any law or regulation. The case is under investigation.

Cargo train derails, killing a steward

The National Railway Administration released a statement online that a cargo train on the Xiangyu railway derailed on Monday, leaving one steward dead and another injured, China News Service reported on Thursday. The accident occurred in the section between Xunyang and Zongxi. The locomotive and 12 carriages ran off the rails.

Monkey attacks student in Wuhan

A monkey that often disturbs local residents in the Hongshan district of Wuhan injured a female college student on Wednesday, Chutian Metropolis Daily reported on Thursday. The wandering macaque appeared on a downtown street on Wednesday and attacked and injured the student. The provincial wild animal protection center received a report and tried to catch it but failed.

Blogger reports steel found in lunch

A college student in Wuhan posted a blog showing a broken iron lock allegedly found in lunch food, Wuhan Evening News reported on Thursday. The blogger packed the lunch, which had been purchased at the school's canteen, and took it to the dormitory, where the piece of iron was allegedly discovered. The school's service department said the incident was investigated, and various factors were considered - including the possibility that it might be the blogger's fault. Netizens following the blog expressed various opinions, with some telling their own stories about finding foreign objects in food.

Farmer compensated for wrongful jailing

A man in Haikou received 1.6 million yuan ($261,000) in compensation after being wrongfully imprisoned 14 years ago, thepaper.com reported on Thursday. Huang Jiaguang, 42, a farmer in the city's Dongshan township, was detained in 1996 as a suspect in a 1994 murder case. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2000. Huang's family appealed repeatedly. The provincial high court ruled recently that Huang was not guilty and released him on Sept 29.

Shanghai

Yearlong bus fuel project successful

One hundred buses in Shanghai have been using fuel made from reprocessed dirty oil for a year, and the results have been perfect, with good power and less pollution, eastday.com reported on Thursday. The outcome of the pilot project was published on Wednesday. The city plans to expand the program to more buses.

Suspect loses out on sale of bicycle

A migrant worker in Shanghai who allegedly stole a bicycle worth 66,000 yuan ($10,800) sold it for 300 yuan because he did not know its value, Shanghai Morning Post reported on Wednesday. The worker wanted to return home but had no money for a train ticket. He allegedly stole the cycle in a residential area at night on Oct 12. He has been detained on suspicion of theft.

Drunken driving case to proceed under law

The people's congress standing committee in Zhouning county said on Thursday that it will handle a drunken driving case involving one of its deputies according to the law, China News Service reported. On Aug 12, Zhang Yuming was stopped in Shanghai. Two days later, Shanghai police sent a document to the Zhouning legislative body asking for approval to arrest Zhang. The request was rejected during a routine meeting of the committee on Oct 24, triggering public criticism after the case was exposed by media.
