Unlocked door invites robber

A woman in Taizhou who left her door unlocked because her boyfriend had lost his keys was robbed at knife point last month. The victim, surnamed Wang, had returned home from her work at a local KTV at about 1 am. Two hours later, a masked man armed with a knife burst into the apartment and took Wang's mobile phone and 1,000 yuan ($145) in cash that was hidden inside a cabinet. A man, surnamed Li, has been detained in connection to the incident.

Careless gamer leaves cash behind

A woman in Zhenjiang who was too engrossed with playing a game on her mobile phone accidentally left her bank card and 7,900 yuan ($1,150) in an ATM. Gao Ping did not realize her mistake until the following day, when she noticed the cash had not been deposited in her account and her card was missing. Surveillance footage showed that the money and card were taken by a man who entered the bank's ATM self-service area after Gao. An investigation has been launched.

Daughter-in-law wins online praise

A woman in Suzhou has been heralded as a model daughter-in-law for the online praise she heaps upon her husband's mother. Unlike many of her friends who post pictures of their children on social media, 30-year-old Wang Naiqin almost exclusively shares pictures of her mother-in-law, telling her friends on instant messaging app WeChat how much she loves her. Wang said her mother-in-law does all the housework and cooks her favorite dishes for her.

Man stole car to impress date

A man was detained in Liuzhou on Feb 8 on suspicion of stealing a car to impress his girlfriend. The man, surnamed Cen, is accused of stealing the car in Guiping on Feb 7 and driving it to a hotel in Liuzhou, where he spent the night with his girlfriend. He was detained after the car owner reported the theft.

Lantern fire hits greenhouses

Around China

Stray Kongming lanterns started a fire in Linyi on Feb 12 that destroyed four greenhouses used to grow strawberries. The fire, which broke out at 7:15 pm, quickly spread and resulted in losses valued at more than 400,000 yuan ($58,200). The remains of several lanterns were found in the wreckage. Local strawberry growers have called on authorities to ban the lanterns to prevent a similar disaster from happening again.

Jilted lover attempts suicide

A woman in Shenzhen who attempted to throw herself off a building near the city's north railway station was talked down by police after a 30-minute standoff. The migrant worker from Zhejiang province, surnamed Mao, attempted to kill herself following an argument with her boyfriend's parents. Mao had been dating her boyfriend for about 18 months and planned to spend the Lunar New Year holiday with his family, but he left her following the quarrel and stopped answering her calls.
