Bilateral research center opens

The China-Arab Reform and Development Research Center was inaugurated at the Songjiang campus of Shanghai International Studies University on April 20. The establishment aims to promote cooperation between the two regions in a variety of industries. The center also provides a 10-day training platform for Arab officials to have in-depth exchanges with Chinese experts and scholars.

International Pets Expo to take place in May

More than 1,400 rare and precious cats and dogs will be exhibited at the 6th Shanghai International Pets Expo which will be held from May 5 to 7 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center. The 1,000 participating felines will include world champions from different breeds like Ragdoll and Scottish Fold.

Pavilions saved from wrecking ball

Pavilions from four European countries showcased during the 2010 Shanghai World Expo will be retained at the exhibition site, the Shanghai Green and Urban Appearance Bureau said. More than 60 percent of the 5,000 residents polled said that they would like to see the French, Italian, Russian and Luxembourg pavilions remain at the expo site instead of demolished.

Health authorities unveil cancer figures

More than 350,000 people in Shanghai suffer from cancer, according to figures released by the city's health authority. Statistics also show that the five-year survival rate in the city is 53 percent, much higher than the national average of 30 percent. The five most common malignant tumors are lung cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, thyroid cancer and breast cancer.

Embattled French bakery fires its employees

Farine, one of Shanghai's most popular bakery chains, is dismissing employees in the wake of its food safety incident, ThePaper.cn reported. The French bakery was subjected to an investigation that uncovered several food safety violations, including the use of expired flour, following a tip-off by a whistle-blower in March. Four of the company's executives were detained and another four are pending trial.
