Marine dreams
Ocean Park continues its education and conservation program with a three-dimensional model contest dubbed "My Dream Ocean". The competition drew more than 3,000 Hong Kong primary school students, with a total of 560 models made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans and waste paper. Judges awarded the honors based on the submission's conservation message, creativity, presentation skills and aesthetics. Baptist (STW) Lui Ming Choi Primary School won in the senior category with its "I Love Ocean!" entry. All the winners' models are currently on display at Ocean Park.

East meets West
Galerie Huit launches its summer program with a group exhibition entitled Artists for All Seasons. The boutique space in the Starstreet neighborhood of Hong Kong has established a solid reputation for its exciting blend of Chinese and international contemporary art since it opened last year. The current exhibition features the work of still-life photographer John Stewart, Chinese painters David Wu, Huang Kai, Yin Xin and Chen Qi. Other works are by local Hong Kong talent, painter Castaly Leung Ching Man.

Myung-whun Chung
South Korean pianist and conductor Myung-whun Chung joins hands with the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra to present Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4, celebrating the master's centennial commemoration.
An exclusive recording artist for Deutsche Grammophon since 1990, Chung has won international prizes and awards for his recordings. The performance by Chung and the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra of Mahler's Symphony No.1 in Beijing two years ago was hailed "a unique, impressive version" by critics.
After a successful debut in 1997, the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra is centered more on concerts as a festival orchestra that gathers remarkably talented Asian musicians active in 31 different orchestras.

Out from the cold
Norway's grunge-rocker band Tripod is making its first tour of the Middle Kingdom. Known in the Trondheim music scene for their massive sound and hard-hitting riffs, the musicians share much in common with US grunge pioneers Alice in Chains. They perform today at the Golden Beach Music Festival in Qingdao and move on for concerts around the country before ending their tour in Beijing July 24.

The English rock band will give a concert in Shanghai. Beijing and Shanghai are the two China stops in this year's tour. The band has been representative of British pop since 1989, and lead vocal Brett Anderson is widely popular among China's young yuppies for his distinctive voice, as well as personal style.

Martell young artists
The Cognac brand Martell will host its annual "artists of the year" exhibition at Shanghai Art Museum, featuring five artists selected by Martell - sculptor Sui Jianguo, painter Li Songsong, photographer Hai Bo, and fashion-portrait photographer duo Inez and Vinoodh.

Zhang Peili's video art
A retrospective exhibition of Zhang Peili will be held. Zhang has been a pioneering artist in China's contemporary video art, with his first video art project created in 1988. The exhibition will feature 22 of his art works from the 1980s to the present. Zhang is 54 and is a professor at China Academy of Fine Arts.
