Only 13 countries contested the first post-World War II tournament with host Brazil, Sweden, Spain and Uruguay topping their respective groups. The four then played a round-robin with Brazil sweeping aside Sweden before 138,900 spectators, at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, July 3, 1950.
