In a city of gorgeous churches and amazing history, Palermo also attracts countless visitors to the Capuchin catacombs, the tomb of over 8,000 bodies. The mummified bodies span all ages and include men, women and children. Their bodies hang on the walls and rest in open caskets. The dressed mummies are recognizable by social class, sex or profession. The catacomb started in 1599, as Capuchin monks discovered that their catacombs contained a mysterious preservative that could help mummify the dead. The catacombs are open to the public today.
