WASHINGTON - The United States and China need cooperate and build mutual trust, which is in the interest of the world, US Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said here Tuesday.

"The world needs its two largest economies to work together," said Reid, who just led a 10-member Senate delegation on a week- long visit to China.

"We have to communicate and build mutual trust," Reid said in a statement issued after the group returned home. "Our meetings in China helped improve that relationship."

The statement noted that the "primary focus" of the historic delegation, which represents more than a third of the US population and included some of the most senior members of the Senate, centered on economic and trade issues, including expanding US export to China.

China is the second largest trading partner of the United States and its third largest export market with bilateral trade totaling $385.34 billion in 2010, according to China's Commerce Ministry.

China will work with the United States to actively implement the consensus reached between President Hu Jintao and President Barack Obama, and hopes that the two countries could take each other's key concerns into consideration, and foster cooperation and promote friendship to a higher level, said Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China when meeting with the US Congress delegation in Beijing last week.
