Mebazaa in the address reiterated his commitment to achieving democratic transition, saying his latest empowerment by the country's parliament to issue decrees, will enable the caretaker government to take important decisions related to the forthcoming law on general amnesty, employment for young people and political reform.

Mebazaa, in his second televised address since appointment, also promised wide social negotiations.

Following the ouster of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the country has witnessed a number of strikes and sit-ins, where people called for the improvement of living conditions and addressing the rising unemployment rate.

More acts of violence were reported on Wednesday in northeastern Tunisia, when some 100 people attacked a police station in the town of Sidi Thabet. A policeman was injured in the attack and two people were arrested, Tunisian TAP press agency said Wednesday.

Following the incident, the country's Interior Ministry issued a communique on Wednesday saying that such criminal acts against police stations will not be tolerated.
