December 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, or Boxing Day tsunami, which struck on Dec 26, 2004, triggered by a 9.2 earthquake in the Indian Ocean off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The province of Aceh on Sumatra was the first one to be hit, with waves killing tens of thousands. The confirmed death toll in Indonesia is over 130,000, but government estimates of the total number of dead, including missing, range up to 230,000.
