China to 'have own luxury clothes brand'

BEIJING — China will boast its homegrown luxury clothes brands thanks to the growing market potential and rising brand awareness, an association official said.

Wang Zhuo, secretary-general of China National Garment Association, told China Daily that compared with foreign competitors, Chinese clothes producers have a lot of advantages, such as developed complete industry chains, a mature market and stable consumer groups.

“The most important thing is that China’s clothes market has great potential, and the ground is fertile for producers. Although currently there are no Chinese luxury clothing brands, in the future they will emerge. They just need time,” Wang said.

Wang added that the time is gone when China’s clothes market grew exceptionally fast on the back of its cheap labor, and the industry’s continued development calls for improved technology and management expertise.

“China’s clothes producers have already possessed advanced clothes making technologies. The biggest challenge for them to cultivate the internationally famous brands lies in improving promotion skills and management skills, ” Wang said.

Li Xuerong, a senior analyst with CIConsulting, said that the Chinese luxury market is growing at a rate of 20 to 30 percent annually. “With the development of the Chinese economy, almost all major world brands rush into the Chinese market.”

“Generally speaking, the foreign luxury brands are well recognized and have wide varieties of products. That is why they take the lead in the Chinese luxury market,” Li said.

Li pointed out that the growth potential of Chinese luxury brands is very huge, yet it is crucial for the domestic producers to further consolidate China’s market and strengthen the sense of brand building.
