BEIJING -- China on Sept 29 said it hopes Australia will create an open, fair and transparent investment environment for Chinese companies.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the remarks at a daily news briefing in response to a media request.

When asked to comment on recent criticism regarding the purchase of an Australian coal mine by a Chinese coal mining corporation, Hong said Chinese companies' investment in Australia is independent and voluntary.

"China is an important foreign investor for Australia and the two countries enjoy good cooperation in investment. It has been proved that China-Australia investment cooperation not only provides Chinese businesses with the opportunities of going global but also benefits Australian economic development and the improvement of people's living standards," Hong said.

"China believes that Australia and its companies view cooperation with the Chinese company from long-term interests. The Chinese government encourages Chinese companies to invest in Australia under the principle of equity and mutual benefit and in accordance with market principles and international laws," Hong added.
