It is said that Wild Geese Descending on the Sandbank is the guqin piece most widely performed throughout China. However, unlike most guqin masterpieces, it does not have a legend behind it.
The piece was first seen in Gu Yin Zheng Zhong, a score that was published in 1634, 10 years before the collapse of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Famous for its relaxing melody, the piece appeared to be immune from the unstable political climate at the time.
In Chinese tradition, every ambitious intellect should pursue a successful career in politics. However, when intellectuals fail to find someone in power who understands their ambition and recognize their talent, they leave politics and become hermits.
The times were difficult in 1634. Many intellectuals were concerned about the future of China; however, they failed to contribute to the state because they were not appreciated by the people in power. Under the circumstances, they retreated from politics and sought peace in their own minds, in the contemplative life.
The soothing melody is a balm for those who seek peace in their hearts.
