Symphony concert

James Gaffigan, who takes up the role of chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in the 2011/12 season, will lead the orchestra to stage a concert in Beijing.

Founded in 1806, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra is Switzerland's oldest symphony orchestra. In the Beijing concert, the young New York-born conductor will concentrate on creating the versatility of styles required to perform the works from Haydn, Mozart, Schubert to Debussy.

Pens with story

German manufacturer of writing instruments Montblanc is holding an exhibition in Beijing, showcasing about 20 well-made pens of the Montblanc Patron of Art Edition. Those fountain pens are all limited editions, each a tribute to an important patron of art and culture in past centuries.

Each pen has its unique style according to the patrons. For example, the pen that salutes Nicolaus Copernicus has a pattern of the picture Motion of the Celestial Bodies painted by Copernicus.

Shanghai

Music duo

Swedish violinist Sara Ovinge and Russian pianist Natalie Papova are a chamber music duo. Ovinge is a soloist playing widely in Europe, and Papova is a top award winner of a piano competition of music conservatories in Belarus.

Confessional art

The exhibition Louise Bourgeois features 33 etchings and intaglio works by Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010), dating from 1999 to 2009 and printed by the renowned print atelier Harlan & Weaver based in New York City. The French-American woman artist is famous for her spider structures and today is recognized as the founder of confessional art. The works of two Chinese women artists Lin Tianmiao and Hu Xiaoyuan will be exhibited together with Bourgeois.

Inspiration from Angkor Wat

Stage designer and painter Wang Meng is holding a solo exhibition. In 2001, Wang was invited to design the stage setting for a production about Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Impressed with the history and heritage of Angkor Wat, he created a series of paintings on the subject.

Hong Kong

War games

Long time Hong Kong resident and veteran Asian journalist Rob McBride believes in writing what he knows about. Bang Bang, McBride's script for Not So Loud Theatre Company, explores the verbal combat between two journalists stuck on board the USS Delaware during the 2003 Iraq War. The scribe behind Not So Loud Theatre's Katoey, One Legged Puppet Show and Amah Drama draws upon his experience as a video journalist for CNN International, BBC World Service, Sky News and Star News to create a claustrophobic powder keg that ignites into a war of words.

Art corridor

Stepping outside the box, Sin Sin Fine Art presents the work of French sculptor Antoinette Rozan with the exhibition Go with the Flow on the footbridge linking Lincoln House to the Taikoo Place complex. It is the artist's direct response to the energy and movement along the bridge and represents a microcosm of life within the hectic pace of Hong Kong. Eight pieces encapsulating youthful energy and vitality give viewers pause to take a breath and reflect as they rush about in between meetings and deadlines.

Macao

Chinese strings

In homage to the melting pot of Portuguese and Chinese customs that Macao has long been known for, the Chinese Orchestra of Macao presents Enchantment of Portugal. The East-meets-West show is part of its series of concerts that feature Chinese and Portuguese artists blending their respective talents to create a unique new sound. Fadista Ricardo Ribeiro will personify the melancholy of traditional Portuguese fado, accompanied by Portuguese guitar player Peter de Castro.
