A dash of color will brighten up the dull winter palette in time for the arrival of the Spring Festival. Gan Tian says it will definitely be all about red.

The New Year color is red. At home, windows and doors will be decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets, and the whole family will be decked out in brilliant shades come the first day of Spring, to usher in health, happiness and wealth.

This year, red is no longer clichd. Fashionistas will notice splashes of scarlet in the latest collections of top designers worldwide.

Witness Emporio Armani's spring/summer 2011 womenswear collection. "Fancy Girl", is decked out in pink, and the must-buy item is a shirt with a qipao collar, which has that delicate touch of tradition. Evening dresses, more or less flared, are designed with a straight necklines and slim shoulder straps.

These plum blossom-pink garments are made from light fabrics with a glimmer of shine. Pay attention to those little trinkets on the models: a tiny bracelet, a delicate clutch bag, or the sandals on their feet ... it's all pink.

While Emporio Armani paints it pink, Fendi expands the palette with various reds in its latest spring/summer 2011 collection: scarlet, rose carmine, blood red, carnation and orange.

Bright colors are the theme. The tangerine shade of the oversized dress in cotton with lantern sleeves, an open neckline and a belted waist will show-off the sexy woman waiting to get out. The small leather clutches are soft and bright, as are the bags in woven straw and canvas.

American label Badgley Mischka opened its first boutique in Beijing last week with an eye-dazzling fashion show. This label, known for its "red-carpet evening wear" is where to look for a touch of glamour at night.

The new collection, though based on a black-and-white theme, is enhanced and enriched by color. A silver pink short one-piece goes well with high-heeled shoes, and a long blood-red gown will dazzle at New Year formals. Other colors that glitter include purple, blue and gold.

Badgley Mischka's silk dresses are never too complicated, but exploits the elegance of simplicity.
