Comment on “Green-energy communities sprouting up” (China Daily Website, July 1)

Having spent 12 years in developing and designing renewable energy systems in China from Beijing to Nanjing to where I am now in Cixi, I still do not understand why we have all these high rise apartments and offices going up across China and still no insulation to stop the sun’s heat entering the building, which then requires air conditioning, like my hotel room, 24 hrs a day. In winter, we are all freezing because the heat we do put in, again by air conditioning systems, is lost through the walls and windows.

The energy waste in China is massive, so it’s time the PRC started to enforce two means of meeting a low carbon society. One is to enforce the use of insulation, as it is impossible to be added later. Second is to change all the heat-producing light bulbs and invest in LED replacements.
