Editor's note:

China has undergone a great breakthrough in sports and Olympic achievement. In Los Angeles in 1932, China sent only one athlete to take part in its first Olympic Games winning zero medals. Fifty-two years later, in the same city, 353 Chinese athletes competed for their country, winning 15 gold medals. Liu Changchun and Xu Haifeng, who represented China in 1932 and 1984, witnessed the country's growth and progress in sports and Olympic Games.

Born in 1909, Liu competed in the 100m and 200m sprints in the 1932 games. He was the first athlete to represent China at an Olympic Games as well as China's sole competitor at the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. He became an athletics coach and university physical education teacher in 1949 when the People's Republic of China was founded and later he became a sports administrator, cultivating and training young Chinese sports talent for success.
