NEW YORK - The Minnesota Timberwolves announced on Tuesday they had reached an agreement to hire Rick Adelman as their next head coach.
The struggling Timberwolves said in a statement that they would formally introduce Adelman as the new coach once the contracts were signed.
The 65-year-old Adelman will become the franchise's 10th head coach, replacing Kurt Rambis.
Adelman had previously served as head coach at four NBA teams, Portland, Golden State, Sacramento and Houston and had taken his teams to the playoffs 16 times in 20 years.
He won four divisional titles, four Western Conference crowns and reached the NBA Finals twice, with Portland in 1990 and 1992. Adelman's overall record is 945-616.
The Timberwolves' 17-65 record last season was the worst in the NBA.
