WASHINGTON - The United States was considering closing its embassy in Syria, citing increasing safety concern for American embassy personnel, CNN reported on Friday.

The reports, citing anonymous US State Department officials, said that the Obama administration was also considering to call back its ambassador in Damascus Robert Ford.

Syria has seen an unabated violence since the unrest broke out in March last year. The United Nations said that more than 5,400 people have been killed in Syria so far.
