MANILA - Eleven people died, while over one million were displaced as torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon flooded large parts of Metro Manila and nine provinces in northern and central Philippines.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Wednesday that tropical storm Haikui caused a landslide in Quezon city that buried two houses, killed nine people and injured four others.

Two other casualties were killed by electrocution and drowning.

A total of 126 roads nationwide remain closed to traffic due to floods. In Metro Manila and in the Central and Southern Luzon provinces, classes in all levels are suspended.

State weather forecasters said Haikui is now outside the Philippine area of responsibility and has made a landfall in the vicinity of Shanghai, China Wednesday morning. But light to moderate rains continues to drench most areas in northern Philippines and Metro Manila.
