PHNOM PENH -- At least four people died and two others injured when their car crashed into a lorry parked on the street side Thursday night in northwestern Banteay Meanchey province, a traffic police chief confirmed Friday.

"Four died on the spot and two badly injured as a speeding car hit a parking lorry from the back," said Suon Nipo, chief of traffic police office in Banteay Meanchey Province. "All the victims are men who rode the Camry-branded car."

He said the lorry was blamed for the accident since it had not placed any warning signal while parking on the street side at night.

Death toll from road accidents remains high in Cambodia. Last year, some 1,900 people had died of the accidents, according to a report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

The Ministry estimated that the country lost about $300 million a year due to the accidents.
