China called for a political solutions to end the war in Syria, said a Chinese envoy on Tuesday at the UN Headquarters.

The crisis should be solved through political dialogue between all parties in Syria in the leadership of the United Nations, Liu said after a discussion at the Security Council.

Liu said China supports the holding of the second Vienna meeting on Nov 14 for further advancement toward a political settlement of the Syrian issue.

China welcomes the larger meeting of foreign ministers from relevant countries on the Syrian issue held in Vienna on Oct 30. At this meeting, five permanent members of the UN Security Council, for the first time, consulted with countries in the region on a political settlement of the Syrian issue. A lot of consensus has been reached.

All parties including the Chinese side support a campaign against terrorist forces including the Islamic State that have been included in the sanction list of the Security Council in accordance with resolutions of the Security Council.

It is imperative to give full play to the coordinating role of the UN to pool together counter-terrorism actions by different parties, Liu said.

There should be no practice of double standards nor linking of terrorism with any specific ethnic groups or religions, he said.

Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations Special Envoy on the crisis said that the UN is ready to support any decision taken at the next round of international talks in Vienna this weekend.

He said he hopes the discussions yield some deliverables for the long-suffering Syrian people – namely, a lessoning of the violence.

"My main purpose was to make sure the Security Council was well-informed about what is happening in Vienna," de Mistura told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York after briefing the Security Council.
