Young girl sings heart out for charity

Ten-year-old singer Doudou has released a CD album to help raise fund for Water Cellar for Mothers, a project to help people, especially women in west China, to overcome poverty caused by water shortages.

The CD, consisting of a number of songs dedicated to public welfare events, is the first charity CD by a child singer in China. Every 50 CDs sold will produce a donation of 1,000 yuan ($148), which will be sufficient to build a water cellar in west China. At the official CD release ceremony, sales were 280,000 yuan ($41,353), enough for 280 new water cellars.

West China is one of the major arid areas on Earth. Male laborers flock to cities as a result of China¡¯s social transformation, leaving women as the main workforce in the poverty- and drought-stricken countryside. They have to trudge several to dozens of kilometers on the mountain roads each day just to fetch water.

Water Cellar for Mothers began in 2000 and has built over 120,000 water cellars and benefited 1.6 million people in drought-stricken areas.

Teahouse should be refreshing treat

The TV adaptation of Chinese literary giant Lao She¡¯s most famous play Teahouse (Cha Guan) will have its premiere on Friday.

Written in 1957, the drama is set in a teahouse in Beijing, the story follows the rise and decline of the owner, Wang Lifa, and various connected characters connected during the chaotic late 19th century and early 20th century. The graphic depiction of grassroots Beijingers has made it a modern classic.

Veteran actor Chen Baoguo leads the cast, all made up of Beijing locals. Chen says it was a dream for him to play the role, because the show, combining tragedy, humor and satire, is a great challenge for any actor. CCTV Channel 8 will air the 39-episode TV series.
