Jilin student takes top spot in speech contest

Sixteen students from 16 Chinese universities took part in the final round of "The 5th China Japanese Speech Contest", held in Tokyo on Monday.

Bai Yinlian (pictured), from Jilin University in China's northeastern Jilin province, took the first place. Bai said after the awards ceremony that the contest had helped her learn more about the differences between Chinese and Japanese culture.

The contest, first held in 2006, is jointly organized by Nikkei and the China Education Association For International Exchange (CEAIE), besides other institutes.

Lin Zuoping, deputy secretary general of CEAIE, said the contest drew more than 8,400 participants from some 190 universities in the country.

It aims to strengthen exchanges and understanding between youth in the two countries, he added.

The themes for this year were "The Chinese culture that I want to introduce to Japanese people" and "My solution to environmental protection."

Park to open at site of Qin emperor tomb

A park is under construction and scheduled to open on Sept 1 at the site of the ruins of the tomb of the second emperor, Hu Hai of the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), son of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang.

Located in Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi province, it is designed to display cultural artifacts from the Qin Dynasty.

The youngest son of Qin Shihuang, Hu Hai built both the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors. He ascended the throne in 210 BC but committed suicide three years later.

Splash of color for Guizhou school

Staff and distributors of Nippon Paint visited Baibi Color Hope Primary School in Guizhou province, as part of its charity program Color, Way of Love.

Before their visit, the team solicited opinions from netizens on how best they could make it a memorable day for students of the school, and drew thousands of comments.

Cooperating with China Youth Development Foundation, Nippon has started many art classes for primary schools in poor areas. The children were given colorful chalks and other tools to create their artworks.

Southwest China to hold Panda Film Festival

A panda film festival is to be held on August 1 in Ya'an in southwest China's Sichuan province, known as the panda's hometown city. This is the 3rd Panda Film Festival, jointly hosted by the China Film Archive and Ya'an municipal government, and will show movies from China, France, New Zealand and other countries.

With the theme "Low-carbon life and animal protection", the one-week festival will show films on animals made in China, France, New Zealand and elsewhere, with the goal of strengthening the public's awareness of environmental and animal protection issues.
