BEIJING - Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with visiting Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi at the Great Hall of the People on Tuesday afternoon.

Congratulating Morsi for being elected president, Hu said Morsi choosing China as one of the first countries to visit after taking office showcased the importance Morsi attaches to relations with China.

Hu said he believes Morsi's China visit will push forward the two countries' cooperation in many areas as well as promote the sound and stable development of China-Egypt relations.

Morsi said he was glad to visit China. Both China and Egypt are cradles of civilization, which is also the foundation for their communication and exchanges.

Hu said he will have an in-depth discussion with Morsi during their hour-long meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Hu held a welcoming reception for Morsi.

After the talks, the two presidents will witness the signing of several cooperation deals between the two countries.

During Morsi's stay in Beijing from August 28 to 30, other Chinese leaders, including top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice President Xi Jinping, will also meet with him.

Morsi arrived in China on Tuesday afternoon.
