China's capital will become a city-wide wireless network in 2011, according to a senior local official.

The target to build the capital into a "Wireless City" has been listed on the agenda by the municipal government, said He. Beijing currently has more than 5,000 WiFi sites, and the number is expected to multiply several times by the end of the year.
The plan aims to set up a web-service platform to offer more convenience to the public, such as road information inquiries, paying water and electricity bills and reminding people to take government's opinion polls. Other convenient plans including paying taxes online and buying a bus ticket by using mobile phones will also be realized in the first half of the year, He said.
