URUMQI - A man stabbed six people on the street in Kashgar City, Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, and committed suicide after being surrounded by police Monday, local police said.

The man, in his 20s and armed with a knife and scissors, stabbed six passers-by, including a middle school student, on Xiyu road in Kashgar at around 8:05 pm, police said.

Police soon came, surrounded the man and fired warning shots. The man, who resisted arrest, committed suicide by cutting his throat with knife three times.

Police confirmed that the man was dead. A driving license and five bottles suspected of containing marijuana were found in the man's pocket.

All the six injured were rushed to hospital. The student, who was seriously hurt, was under emergency treatment.

Investigations into the case are underway.
