Frog

Fengxiang county: home of the clay sculpture

The frog is a tough enemy of destructive insects, and a protector of crops. People regard the frog as a symbol of the "Queen of Night." Folk artists have gone even farther: adding the snake, the scorpion, the centipede and the gecko to it, so as to form the "Five Poisonous Animals" to show their power to drive away mosquitoes and diseases. In addition, a "Picture of Driving Away Harmful Insects" is drawn in the middle of the frog's back. It is holding a butterfly in its mouth, wishing for peace, longevity and a good harvest.

Guan Gong

Fengxiang county: home of the clay sculpture

Guan Gong (The Revered Mr. Guan), a great general of Shuhan in the time of Three Kingdoms (220-280 A.D.), is regarded by common people as a symbol of "Mars," "Mammon" and "Aesculapius." The clay statue of Guan Gong, while keeping the traditional physical characteristics such as the red face, black bear, blue kerchief, green robe, and the dark dragon katana held in his hand, has been given more vitality and wit by the ancient folk techniques.
