This painted scroll shows that the Chinese military training was influenced by modern sports coming from western countries. After the Opium War (1840-1842), the traditional military training ways of Qing Dynasty betrayed its weakness. With the fulfillment of Westernization Movement, modern sports, as military training techniques, were introduced into China. To cultivate new troops, professional coaches from United Kingdom, United States and Japan were employed to teach military and sports courses to the soldiers of Qing Dynasty, which laid the foundation for the development of China’s modern sports.
