Swiss ballet will keep audiences on their toes

The Bejart Ballet Lausanne from Switzerland will perform at the National Center for the Performing Arts on Oct 15 and 16.

Founded by the late French choreographer Maurice Bejart in 1960, the troupe is known for creating works that incorporate dances from different civilizations and illustrating a rich musical repertoire extending from Wagner to Boulez.

Led by Gil Roman, who has served as the company's artistic director since 2007, Bejart Ballet Lausanne will perform their classic works Dionysos and Bolero, and premiere La ou sont les Oiseaux, a piece Roman choreographed based on inspirations from a poem about the Copiapo mining accident in Chile. It is written by Shanghai International Arts Festival deputy general secretary Chen Shenglai.

The troupe will also perform at the Hangzhou Grand Theater on Oct 18 and 19, and at the Shanghai Grand Theater on Oct 21 and 22.
