Comment on "Half in survey don't support inheritance tax" (China Daily, Aug 23)
The story shows that most Chinese people won't support an inheritance tax. But having an inheritance tax that takes over 50 percent of the wealth of the rich after they pass away is good for social stability.
An inheritance tax is important for the government, too, because a small number of families possess a huge proportion of the country's wealth. The children of such wealthy families enjoy greater advantages than the children of middle class and poor families. This could hurt the country, because it could create an undesirable situation in which it would become harder for students of ordinary families to succeed, even if they were very good. The inheritance tax will help prevent the wealthy from blocking the rise of such capable youngsters.
