My Summer Getaway

A searing heat wave swept across most of China last week. Beijing wilted under record-high temperatures of more than 40 C. According to historical weather data, China has experienced temperatures above 40 C only twice in July: On July 24, 1999, when temperatures climbed to 41.9 C; and on July 14, 2002, when it was 41.1 C. China Daily staff writers Fu Yu and Chen Jie asked several celebrities, luminaries and officials what they usually do on a hot summer day.

My Summer Getaway

What are your hot tips for the hot summer?

I believe in one old Chinese saying: A calm heart is naturally cool.

Did the heat cause you to pay more attention to climate change and cutting down on carbon emissions?

Yes. Actually I started paying attention to climate change and environmental protection four years ago. I was designated as the first national Goodwill Ambassador in China for the United Nations Environment Programme. I think we should cut down on our carbon emissions in our daily lives  by making the habit of taking a walk instead of driving a car once a week.

Where are you spending your holiday this year?

Taking a holiday is a luxury since my work is on a full schedule. I will be staying in the US for a month soon to do some dubbing on a film. I will try to take time off to see an opera and to experience the nightlife in New York. A short period of study at Columbia University would also be my ideal way of relaxing.

Where did you go on holiday in previous summers? Do you have some unforgettable memories?

My work trip to New Zealand in 2007 was quite unforgettable. Although I was busy on various shoots for my photo album, I have never forgotten the beautiful scenery where they shot the “Lord of the Rings” where I could see vast snow-capped mountain ranges fade into purple mist at sunset.

What do you enjoy the most, and least, about traveling?

I most enjoy having a simple journey with my family and friends without any pressure. I least enjoy seeing people dump rubbish, wasting food and running a red light in traffic.

Where would you like to go next?

The Maldives and Egypt would be my first choices.

So far, believe it or not, we have not turned on the air conditioner. If the heat gets unbearable, we just jump into the pool.
