What's on

London-based Chinese artist Zhong Ming is holding a solo show at Gallery Compass in Beijing. On display are more than 20 oil portraits and landscapes Zhong has created over the past decade.

Zhong, who is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in the United Kingdom, rose to stardom as a vanguard artist in Beijing 30 years ago with his portrayal of French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre. The exhibition will move to Paris on Sept 16.

German new arts

What's on

A group of German Artists has brought its new media works to Beijing.

The exhibition at Today Art Museum features 18 multimedia works and installations, which explore the relationships between mankind and its urban environment, and new technologies, such as the mobile telecommunications, curator Pierre Wolter says.

Top artists' show

Twenty of China's most influential artists are presenting a show at National Art Museum of China.

Co-organized by the Contemporary Art Academy of China and the museum, the event, entitled Constructive Dimension, marks the first collective appearance of vanguard artists in the nation's top official art museum.

Established artists, such as Luo Zhongli, Xu Bing, Cai Guoqiang, Fang Lijun, Zeng Fanzhi and Wang Guangyi, are presenting their signature works and latest creations, curator Ye Yongqing says.

Piano recital

In Memory of the 200th Anniversary of Chopin's Birth: Cyprien Katsaris Piano Recital is being staged to commemorate the master at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.

Concerto No 2 in F minor (Piano solo version by Chopin), and major pieces by Edvard Grieg and Robert Schumann will be performed by French-Cypriot pianist and composer Cyprien Katsaris, winner of several awards, including the Vermeil Medal of the City of Paris (2001).

Drama on troubles

Directed by Li Shan, the new drama Stop Fussing Around (Bie Zheteng) delves into the problems of marital life. Da Chen (performed by young actor Zhang Jing, pictured) hasn't been very successful in his career and his wife often ridicules him. In desperation, he invests in the stock market but loses 10,000 yuan, leading to more quarrels and headaches. Eventually, the couple realizes the truth about love and marriage.

London Symphony

Conductor Ristjan Jarvi will lead the London Symphony Orchestra to deliver two concerts in Shanghai. Chinese cellist Wang Jian and French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet will appear as the featured soloists. The program for the Sept 9 concert is: Four Sea Interludes by Britten, Cello Concerto No 1 by Shostakovich, and Concerto for Orchestra by Bartok. Sept 10: Symphonic Dances from West Side Story by Bernstein, Piano Concerto No 1 by Liszt, and Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninov.

Polish Ballet

The National Ballet of Poland will present an original ballet in two acts: Chopin, the Romantic Artist. The script is by writer Antoni Libera, while the music will include not only pieces by Chopin but also composers who were influenced by his work: Hector Berlioz, Sergei Lyapunov, Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann. The production will be choreographed by Patrice Bart.

Ode to peace

The first large-scale dance drama on religious culture in the country will be staged at the Shanghai Grand Stage. At its premiere at the world's first Buddhist forum in Hangzhou in 2006, the drama won great acclaim from artists and Buddhists. It tells the story of the birth of Buddhism and its introduction into China.

The show makes full use of various stage performance forms, such as traditional Chinese dance and martial arts to depict the integration of Buddhist culture with traditional Chinese Taoism.

Wu Guanzhong

An ongoing memorial exhibition honors master painter Wu Guanzhong who passed away on June 25 at the age of 91. Wu donated many of his paintings to Shanghai Art Museum in the last few years of his life. An academic forum about Wu and his work will be staged during the show.

Liu Rongying

Taiwan professor Liu Rongying is devoted to Chinese ink art presentations of birds and flowers. Liu believes the ideal of Oriental art is discovering ultimate purity and peace of mind in the chaotic world.
